Marcel Wubbolts is currently Chief Technology Officer at DSM, based in Urmond (NL).

Marcel Wubbolts holds a PhD at the department of Biochemistry, University of Groningen, NL, and was Post-Doctoral research associate and subsequently Assistent Professor at the Institute of Biotechnology at the ETH in Zürich, CH leading a research group on biocatalyst development and remained there until late 1997.

Following his positions in academia, he joined the Life Sciences and Material Sciences company DSM in Geleen, NL as a senior scientist and became Manager R&D and Managing Director of DSM Biotech GmbH, an industrial biotechnology research satellite of DSM, in Jülich, D. Thereafter, he was Competence Manager Biocatalysis & Biotransformations for DSM Pharmaceutical Products at the Center for Advanced Synthesis, Catalysis & Development in Geleen, NL. Subsequently, he became Program Director at the DSM Innovation Center in Delft, the Netherlands, running the Industrial (White) Biotechnology programme, which is aimed at developing sustainable production methods for intermediates for pharma, nutritional and materials applications. Early 2011 he was appointed as VP Research & Technology at the DSM Innovation Center and since October 1st he is at his current position.

Marcel Wubbolts has published over eighty publications and patents in the area of chemical synthesis, biocatalysis, biotechnology and metabolic engineering. He is a member of advisory boards and steering committees in several scientific consortia and serves on the board of the Working Group Applied Biocatalysis of the Dutch Society for Biotechnology (NBV); the board of Delegates of the European Federation of Biotechnology Section on Applied Biocatalysis (ESAB); and leads the Industrial Biotechnology Section of the Suschem, the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry.
