Claus Hviid Christensen (born 1968) is Head of Emerging Technology in Group R&D at DONG Energy. Previously, he was CEO at Lindoe Offshore Renewables Center (LORC), Vice President for Emerging Technology at Haldor Topsøe A/S, Professor at Technical University of Denmark and Director for Danish National Research Foundations Center of Excellence "Center for Sustainable and Green Chemistry". He has published more than 175 peer-reviewed papers in international journals that are currently cited more than 1000 times annually. He is the inventor on more than 35 patents and has founded new companies based on his research.
Claus Hviid Christensen has received several prestigious awards, incl. The Minister of Science's EliteForsk Award and the Lundbeck Foundation's Research Prize for Young Scientists. He has been member of numerous boards, committees, councils and think tanks. Currently, his is the chairman of the Danish Council for Research Policy that that supports the Minister of Science, technology and innovation, the Government and the Parliament on the formulation of research policy.
Claus Hviid Christensen originally conducted R&D within traditional refinery technology for a number of years before his focus shifted entirely to bio-refining with special emphasis on manufacturing of value-added products for chemical industry using biomass as a new and sustainable feedstock. Based on this approach, he has published several papers and book chapters, and given invited lectures in most of the world about the necessity of integrating various disciplines, incl. classical chemical engineering, microbiology, materials design, catalytic technology etc. to eventually arrive at competitive bio-refineries.
