Dr. Christian Patermann was born in Gliwice, in 1942. Since his retirement in 2007 he operates as independent consultant for public and private institutions and companies.

From 1971 until 1996 he was in charge of different functions at the German Federal Ministry of Science and Education, being appointed Deputy Director General of the Ministry in 1993. In 1996 he became Programme Director for “Environment” at the Research Directorate General of the European Commission in Brussels where he conceived and implemented the 4th, 5th and 6th RTD Framework Programmes of the EU in this field. Hereafter, he became Programme Director for “Biotechnology, Agriculture & Food”.

Patermann was appointed Chairman of the Standing Committee on agricultural research, SCAR. He is also expert in international cooperation, including the European enlargement process and the relationship between Europe and the BRICK-countries.
