Ben Durham was appointed Director: Biotechnology at South Africa‘s National Department of Science and Technology in 2003, after spending seven years at the National Research Foundation, where he managed two (of nine) research support programmes.

His key responsibility is the implementation of South Africa’s National Biotechnology Strategy (2001), which ranges from strategic direction, institutional performance and the development of an enabling environment.  He is currently pursuing his PhD in technology commercialization (DaVinci Institute).

Ben is/has been on the boards of several companies/agencies involved in innovation, and is the vice-chair of the South African Executive Council, the body which regulates the introduction of GMOs into South Africa.
